Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Corporal Scott Owens enlisted in the United States Army in August of 2000. He carried out two tours of duty in Iraq.
US Army Specialist Hugo Gonzalez was severely injured in combat in Baqubah, Iraq on June 21, 2004. He was on patrol in a Hummer bucket truck when his unit was ambushed. The vehicle took a direct hit from an improvised explosive device (IED) and a furious gun battle broke out with insurgents.
Army Sergeant Jorge Sepulveda joined the military in 2004, at the Military Entrance Processing Station in San Juan, Puerto Rico, citing a moral and patriotic obligation to defend the country. He felt he had to do his part to help build a better future for his family and fellow Americans, and wanted to start a tradition of military service in his family.
Sgt. Sepulveda served in the Army for nine years. He served the country during Operation Enduring Freedom with the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) and the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
Army Staff Sergeant Marcos Jimenez joined the military to serve his country and to make his family proud. Staff Sergeant Jimenez was severely wounded on the morning of March 19, 2011 when the armored truck he was in was blown up by an improvised explosive device in the village of Pakhabe’Shana in Logar, Afghanistan.
Army Staff Sergeant Baron Toms joined the military in 2001 out of Dallas, Texas. His family has a long-standing tradition of military service.
On August 18, 2007, Staff Sergeant Toms was wounded during the second of his three deployments to Iraq. A rocket attack killed two members of his unit and injured Toms. The blast caused Toms to hit his head on a concrete wall, leaving him unconscious for a period of time. He has been diagnosed with Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and has honorably retired from the Army.
