A new home for an Army Staff Sergeant

In front of many friends and supporters, Army Staff Sergeant Giovanna Moreno was gifted a mortgage-free home in Kissimmee, Florida on November 2.

Staff Sergeant Moreno, whose 15-year service included a four-year deployment to Iraq, endured many life-threatening experiences throughout her military career, including exposure to small arms fire and an IED explosion, which led to several physical and psychological injuries, such as back and shoulder pain, migraines and PTSD.

“It’s a blessing because it makes the recovery process go a little smoother,” said Staff Sergeant Moreno of her new home.

The house includes several accommodations to help her recover from her injuries, including an in-ground pool to help with her PTSD.

“It means so much to us to have the support of our community and family,” said Kim Valdyke of Building Homes for Heroes, who is the Construction Operations Manager for the Southeast Region. “It helps our veterans know that they are welcome in their new home.”

The home gifting would not have been possible without Building Homes for Heroes’ biggest supporters, including Chase Bank, which donated the home to Building Homes for Heroes; Advance Auto Parts, our charity’s biggest cash donor; and York, which donated an air conditioning unit for the house.

Staff Sergeant Moreno will live in the home with her two sons, John and Marcus.

“I’ve never lived in a two-story house in so many years,” said John, 15. “It’s something new for me. It’s really great.”
